South Hills Trail Timber Management Project - 2

Public Works Press Release Header

SWEET HOME, Ore. February 26, 2020 — This week as part of the planting phase of the South Hills Trail Timber Management Project, the City of Sweet Home's timber consultant Cascade Timber Consulting planted 137 young Douglas Fir and pine trees on a small section of a South Hills Trail hillside.

In recent years intense winter storms caused several trees and large branches to fall, which damaged both City and private property, including vehicles and structures. In the spring of 2019, the City went through the public process to acquire a timber consultant. On June 11, 2019, the City Council approved the motion to enter into a contract with Cascade Timber Consulting (CTC) for Timber Consulting Services. CTC assessed the entire 1.3 miles South Hills Trail and located only a small section of hazardous trees. For the safety of our residents and tourists alike, the treacherous widow makers and other damaged trees were removed by contracted loggers.

Our City staff & contractors understand trees are assets to our community when properly planted and maintained. They help improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants, and provide wildlife habitat, among many other benefits. We are committed to keeping our City Parks, trails, and other properties beautiful, and well maintained for all residents enjoy, and other Oregonians who are passing through our scenic community.
