Path to Reopening Sweet Home - 1

SWEET HOME, Ore. May 8, 2020, 5:40 p.m.— Yesterday, May 7th, Oregon Governor Kate Brown announced her "Reopening Oregon, Details on Restarting Public Life and Business," pre-requisites for communities.  The Governor's plan includes a three phase approach to reopening, with phase 1 commencing as early as May 15th.  City staff & officials have been in regular contact with your Linn County Commissioners, Senator Fred Girod, and Representative Sherrie Sprenger. We will continue to work with our regional partners to serve our community going forward.

The Governor's three phase plan is a first step on the path forward to reopening our community.  The plan requires some criteria be met at the county level and some criteria be met on a regional level defined as a "health region."  Linn County is in a health region that includes Yamhill, Polk, Lincoln, Benton and Marion counties.

Yesterday our County Commissioners submitted a letter to the Governor requesting she consider opening Linn County at a phase 1 level on May 15th, the earliest possible date according to the Governor. Their letter outlines how Linn County meets all of Governor Brown's criteria at all levels. We are hoping for a response from the Governor's office soon.

In their letter to the Governor, your Linn County Board of Commissioners documented Linn County meets all seven (7) of the Governor's criteria for a phase 1 level reopening:

  1. A declining prevalence of COVID-19,
  2. A minimum testing regiment of >30 people per 10,000 population per week,
  3. Demonstrated a robust contact tracing system in place,
  4. Adequate isolation facilities,
  5. Meet finalized business sector guidelines regarding personal health and safety measures in local businesses (see links below),
  6. Demonstrate sufficient healthcare capacity, and
  7. Have sufficient PPE supplies.

We appreciate the diligence of the Linn County Board of Commissioners and our other elected officials for their efforts to join the Governor on the path to reopen our community. We will share more information as we learn from our regional partners, particularly our County Commissioners; Chair Roger Nyquist, Commissioner Will Tucker, and Commissioner John Lyndsey.

The City hopes to have more information regarding reopening soon and will share it at that time.
