1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
Why read 1,000 books before Kindergarten?
Reading books at home is one of the best ways to get your child ready for school. Reading 1,000 books sounds like a lot, but if you read just 1 picture book with your child every day, you will read over 365 books in just 1 year! And 730 books in two years, and over 1,000 books in just three years.
How to get started:
Stop by the Sweet Home Library or the Friends of the Library Bookstore and pick up a reading log.
Keep track of the books you read.
Every time you read 100 books and fill up your log, bring the log back to the library and get a certificate and prize.
Then pick up the next log for the following 100 books!
It’s okay if you read the same book 100 times! Rereading old favorites helps the brain grow. Reading a book your child knows to strengthen connections in the brain, ensuring those connections stay put as your child continues to learn new things. Any book read to your child counts, even if it wasn’t you reading to them. Grandparents, siblings, friends, audiobooks, all count, even VOX books!
Need help picking out a book to read? Come on in, and we will help you pick out a book you can enjoy with your child.
Any child that has not started Kindergarten can start this program! Families are encouraged to participate together, so feel free to sign up multiple children.
Rewards:

- 200 Books: Certificate, sticker, and draw from the prize bin
- 300 Books: Certificate, sticker, and draw from the prize bin

- 500 Books: Certificate, sticker, and choose a free book
- 600 Books: Certificate, sticker, and draw from the prize bin
- 700 Books: Certificate, sticker, and draw from the prize bin
- 800 Books: Certificate, sticker, and draw from the prize bin
- 900 Books: Certificate, sticker, and draw from the prize bin
- 1,000 Books: Completion Certificate, sticker, reading-related game, recognition, photo on social media (if permission is given) and go on the “1000 Books Read Wall of Fame” plus a bag with educational goodies!
