City of Sweet Home Class IV ATV City Streets Use Ordinance

SWEET HOME, Ore. November 6, 2019 — The Sweet Home City Council has passed an ordinance allowing Class IV ATV operation on city streets which will go into effect on November 8th, 2019.

The Sweet Home Police Department would like to highlight key elements within the ordinance. 

  • Class IV ATV’s (side-by-sides) only
    • Is 65" wide or less at its widest point
    • Has a dry weight of 1,800 pounds or less
    • Has nonstraddle seating
    • Has a steering wheel for steering control
    • Travels on four or more pneumatic tires that are six inches or more in width and has wheels with a rim diameter 14" or less.
  • Vehicles must have the following safety Equipment: (ref: OAR 735-116-0000)
    • Class IV ATV Sticker (Operating Permit) https://store.oregonstateparks.org/
    • Operating muffler and exhaust system under 99db
    • Fire extinguisher
    • Roll bar or enclosed cab
    • Seats and seat belts for driver and all passengers
    • Windshield wipers if equipped with a windshield
    • Headlights and tail lights after dark
  • Vehicles must have headlights and taillights for daylight use.
  • Vehicles must be equipped with headlights, taillights, registration plate light, brake lights turn signal lights and rear reflectors to be operated at night
  • Must be 16 years old or older with a valid drivers license
    • A person may not operate an ATV while the person’s driving privileges (i.e. Driver License) are suspended or revoked
  • Must have a valid Class IV ATV Operator Permit http://www.rideatvoregon.org/
  • Must have insurance
  • Must wear seat belt
  • Must wear helmet with the chin strap fastened if they are under age 18
  • Adhere to speed limits
  • May be operated on city streets.
  • Prohibited from operating on Highway 20 and Highway 228 except within these parameters: 
    • The ATV may cross those highways at a 90º angle
    • The crossing must be in an area free of obstructions
    • The vehicle operator must yield the right of way to highway traffic 
    • The vehicle must come to a complete stop before entering the highway
    •  The highway crossing must be made at a highway intersection or at a place that is more than 100' from any highway intersection
