Sweet Home Police Less Tolerant of Illegal Fireworks
SWEET HOME, Ore. June 28, 2021 — Today Sweet Home Police Chief Jeff Lynn, along with Sweet Home Fire District Chief Dave Barringer and Oregon Department of Forestry Fire Supervisor Chad Calderwood, met to discuss their safety concerns for the upcoming holiday celebrations.
Chief Lynn said Sweet Home officers would be less tolerant of illegal fireworks because of the fire danger. Fireworks are a traditional part of America's 4th of July festivities, yet people take needless risks when they celebrate. He went on to say that setting off illegal fireworks is not just a ticket but a Class B Misdemeanor. Legal fireworks are novelty devices, wheels, flitter sparklers, fountains, smoke devices, and ground spinners.
Fire Chief Barringer is asking the public to be responsible with your legal fireworks. He asks that we light them in safe places like on asphalt or concrete driveways and to have water nearby. Celebrating the 4th of July is not a reason to burn your neighbor's property, and you are legally liable for damages. After last year's wildfire devastation, we need to be extra cautious of our celebration methods. He also asks the community to practice the Four BE's: BE Prepared, BE Responsible, BE Safe, and BE Aware.
Fire Supervisor Calderwood is anticipating our area in High Fire Danger by the 4th of July. He reminds the community that fireworks are prohibited on all state, federal or private industrial forest lands. Individuals run the risk of starting a forest fire and receiving hefty fines and the potential of criminal charges, including arson.
Linn County Sheriff Jim Yon said via email, "The Sheriff's Office will have extra patrols working all across Linn County on the 4th of July. The 4th of July is one of our busiest days of the year. There are several events throughout the county to keep us busy. This year we had a relatively dry spring and have been experiencing sweltering weather this week. We ask everyone to be prepared when setting off legal fireworks by having water readily available to put out any fires and have a bucket with water to dispose of used fireworks. These simple precautions can make all the difference towards an enjoyable celebration rather than a disaster."
From all of your area first responders we are wishing you a Happy & Safe 4th of July!
